Through traffic restricted on Hatanpään valtatie on weekdays to improve traffic flow

Construction of the tramway extension towards Pirkkala is currently underway on Hatanpään valtatie. Due to temporary traffic arrangements and high traffic volumes, traffic jams have been occurring. To improve mobility for residents, visitors, and public transport operations, through traffic will be restricted on weekdays.

The restriction applies to the section between Tampereen valtatie and Lahdenperänkatu from Monday, 22 September, on weekdays between 6:00 AM and 18:00 PM. The restriction does not apply to public transport, cycling or walking. In addition, during September, the speed limits and parking zones for electric scooters will be adjusted near tramway construction sites.

A traffic survey conducted in summer revealed that approximately one third of all private car traffic on Hatanpään valtatie is through traffic. Alternative routes for crossing the city centre continue to be recommended via Tampere Ring Road (Tampereen kehätie) and the Rantaväylä Tunnel.

Construction work on Hatanpään valtatie includes municipal infrastructure, tramway base structures, and bridge building. Currently, one lane is in use in each direction, and some signal-controlled intersections have been replaced with roundabouts. The first tram tracks have been installed at the intersections of Hatanpään valtatie with Tampereen valtatie and Nuolialantie.

The central area of the roundabout at Hatanpään valtatie and Tampereen valtatie has been expanded into a work zone, improving the roundabout’s capacity. The safety and functionality of traffic arrangements are continuously monitored to ensure smooth mobility for those living, working, and visiting the area.

The temporary roundabouts on Hatanpään valtatie are expected to remain in use until summer 2027, and construction will be completed in 2028. In the final layout, the tramway will run in the centre of the street, with one driving lane in each direction.
