We are building a tramway in Pirkkala and Linnainmaa
The Pirkkala-Linnainmaa Alliance of Tampere Tramway starts construction work on a new section of the Ratikka tramway. We have drawn up implementation plans and related street, tram stop and traffic arrangement plans for the tramway from the Hatanpää highway to Pirkkala Suuppa and from Tays Hospital to Linnainmaa.
The tramway will be implemented in phases to ensure adequate state subsidisation for the entire route. In the first phase, tramway sections will be built from Sori Square to Partola and from Kauppi Campus to Niihama. The aim is to start services to these temporary terminals in August 2028.
In phase 2 (2028–2032), we will build the sections from Partola to Suuppa and from Niihama to Linnainmaa. Tram traffic to Suuppa and Linnainmaa is scheduled to start in early 2032. The councils of Tampere and Pirkkala decided on the construction and phasing on the basis of options prepared by the Pirkkala-Linnainmaa Alliance.

Pirkkala-Linnainmaa Alliance of Tampere Tramway to build a new tramway section
The Pirkkala-Linnainmaa Alliance for Tampere Tramway is going to build a new tramway section with related street and traffic arrangements from Sori Square in Tampere to Suuppa in Pirkkala and from Kauppi Campus in the Tays Hospital area to Linnainmaa. The plan is a continuation of the tramway section already in service between Sori Square and Kauppi Campus. The combined length of the planned branches is 13.6 km. The tramway will be implemented in phases to ensure adequate state subsidisation for the entire route.
Phase 1 will include the building of the sections from Sori Square to Partola and from Kauppi Campus to Niihama. The aim is to start services to these temporary terminals in August 2028.
Phase 2 (2028–2032) will include the building of the sections from Partola to Suuppa and from Niihama to Linnainmaa. Tram traffic to Suuppa and Linnainmaa is scheduled to start in early 2032.
In their April 2023 decisions, the Pirkkala and Tampere councils made the construction decision conditional on securing state aid for construction. On 21 October 2024, the councils of Tampere and Pirkkala decided on the construction and phasing on the basis of options prepared by the Pirkkala-Linnainmaa Alliance. The aim is for the first construction works for phase 1 to start in late 2024.
The length of the planned tramway between Sori Square and Suuppa in Pirkkala is about 9.3 km, with 11 pairs of tram stops planned for the section. The planned tramway between Kauppi Campus and Linnainmaa is 4.3 kilometres long and will include four pairs of stops. The tram stop locations have been chosen so as to maximise the number of existing and future services, residents and jobs within a radius of about 800 metres.
The development phase of the Pirkkala-Linnainmaa Alliance for Tampere Tramway started in October 2023. During the development phase, an implementation plan was drawn up for the tramway and related street, traffic and tram stop arrangements for the sections from Hatanpää highway to Suuppa in Pirkkala and from Tays Hospital to Linnainmaa.
The development phase of the Pirkkala-Linnainmaa Alliance was preceded by the project planning phase, which ended in February 2023. During the development phase, the preliminary street plans and comparisons of options presented in the project plan have been specified. More information on the project plan can be found on the Tampere Tramway website >>
The Pirkkala-Linnainmaa alliance of Tampere Tram comprises Tampereen Raitiotie Oy, City of Tampere, Pirkkala municipality, AFRY Finland Oy, Sweco Finland Oy, NRC Group Finland Oy, and YIT Infra Oy.
Plan area on the map
The route of the future tramway will run from Hatanpää valtatie and the Sori Square stop to Rantaperkiö and along Nuolialantie to Härmälä. From Härmälä the route continues to Partola and along Naistenmatkantie towards Suuppa terminus in Pirkkala.
On the Linnainmaa fork, the route leaves from the Tays area at the current Kauppi campus stop along Tenniskatu to Ruotula and crosses Teiskontie at Alasjärvi. From there, the route continues from Heikkilänkatu to the terminus at Linnainmaa.
