We are planning a tramway to Pirkkala and Linnainmaa

The development phase of the Tampere Tram’s Pirkkala-Linnainmaa alliance is underway! During the development phase, we will draw up implementation plans for the tramway and the related street and traffic arrangements from Hatanpään valtatie to Suuppa in Pirkkala and from Tays to Linnainmaa.

The goal is that at the end of the development phase, in October 2024, the Pirkkala and Tampere councils can decide on the construction of the tramway, its scope and the possible gradual implementation of the tramway, based on the plans.

The Pirkkala-Linnainmaa alliance of Tampere Tram will design a new tramway route

The Pirkkala-Linnainmaa alliance of the Tampere Tram will design a new tramway route and related street and traffic arrangements from Sori Square in Tampere to Suuppa in Pirkkala and from Kauppi campus to Linnainmaa. The plan is an extension of the already existing tramway between Sori Square and the Kauppi campus.

The planned length of the tramway between the Sori Square and Suuppa in Pirkkala is approximately 9,300 metres, and 11 pairs of stops are planned for the section. The planned length of the tramway between the Kauppi campus and Linnainmaa is approximately 4,250 metres, and includes four pairs of stops. The tramway stops are designed so that there are as many current and future services, residents and jobs as possible within a radius of about 800 metres from the stop.

The development phase of the Pirkkala-Linnainmaa alliance of Tampere Tram started in October 2023. The development phase will include drawing up implementation plans for the tramway and related street and traffic arrangements. The goal is that at the end of the development phase, in October 2024, the Pirkkala and Tampere councils can decide on the construction of the tramway, its scope and the possible gradual implementation of the tramway, based on the implementation planning. The preliminary estimate on schedule is that if the Tampere and Pirkkala councils decide on the construction of the tramway in late 2024, the construction of the tramway would be scheduled for 2025–2028. The construction schedule will be specified during the development phase. In their April 2023 decisions, the Pirkkala and Tampere councils made the construction decision conditional on securing government aid for the construction.

The development phase was preceded by a project planning phase, which ended in February 2023. The development phase includes further specifying the preliminary street plans and alternative comparisons presented in the project plan. More information about the project plan on the Tampere Tram website >>

The route of the future tramway will run from Hatanpää valtatie and the Sori Square stop to Rantaperkiö and along Nuolialantie to Härmälä. From Härmälä the route continues to Partola and along Naistenmatkantie towards Suuppa terminus in Pirkkala.

On the Linnainmaa fork, the route leaves from the Tays area at the current Kauppi campus stop along Tenniskatu to Ruotula and crosses Teiskontie at Alasjärvi. From there, the route continues from Heikkilänkatu to the terminus at Linnainmaa.
